North Carolina running back British Brooks suffered a season-ending injury on Saturday night, according to a report.

That’s per 247Sports’ Ben Sherman, who cites confirmation from a North Carolina official. Brooks is a redshirt senior who chose to return to North Carolina for his 5th year of eligibility. He’s also a former walk-on.

This is a potentially devastating blow to the Tar Heels’ offense. Brooks was expected to be UNC’s starting running back this season as the offense looks to replace Ty Chandler.

Brooks is by far the most experienced running back in UNC’s room. Last season, he carried the ball 31 times for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns. He represented North Carolina at ACC Kickoff back in July.

North Carolina is now left with a largely unproven running back room. Veterans such as DJ Jones, Elijah Green and Caleb Hood could get a chance to carry the load. That trio has a combined 114 carries in their collegiate careers.

However, UNC also has a pair of true freshman running back that have garnered early attention in fall camp. Omarion Hamption and George Pettaway could break into the rotation quickly with Brooks out. Hampton has been especially impressive in his first fall camp, according to reports.

North Carolina opens the 2022 season with Florida A&M on Aug. 27.
