Scott Forbes updated the status of North Carolina center fielder Vance Honeycutt on Monday as the Tar Heels get set for the Indiana State Regional.

Forbes said Monday that Honeycutt, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, won’t play for the Tar Heels in the NCAA regional this weekend. Forbes clarified Honeycutt, who has missed the last 7 games, has a lower-back injury. UNC had labeled the issue as a lower-body injury until Forbes updated Honeycutt’s status on Monday, per Adam Smith of Inside Carolina. Forbes also didn’t appear too optimistic about Honeycutt for the Super Regionals, either, if the Tar Heels advance.

UNC (35-22) opens against Iowa (42-14) on Friday in Terre Haute, Indiana, with host Indiana State (42-15) and Wright State (39-21) also at the event.

Honeycutt was the first Tar Heel to receive the DPOY award since its inception in 2017 and also was selected to the All-ACC third team. By the time he won the award, he had 141 putouts in his 50 games started, as well as a SportsCenter Top 10 home run robbery.
