Wes Durham catches mixed reaction for call on Wake Forest's game-winning 3-pointer
Wes Durham had a less than thrilling call at the end of the Wake Forest-Syracuse game as the Demon Deacons hit a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds remaining to win the ACC Tournament game on Wednesday afternoon.
The ACC Network broadcaster built up the call as Daivien Williamson hit the game-winning 3-pointer: “Back for Williamson for the win.”
But as soon as the ball went through the net, Durham was silence for several seconds, and that caught the ear of basketball fans watching the game. However, others came to Durham’s defense and said he did the right thing by letting the moment stand for itself and crowd reaction to pour over the play.
Durham is well known in ACC circles, as he began his professional career as the radio voice for Georgia Tech from 1995-2013 before he joined FOX Sports South to handle play-by-play duties for ACC football, basketball and baseball games.
He’s also the son of longtime “Voice of the Tar Heels” Woody Durham.
Here’s a sample of the reaction:
Could those announcers been less excited for the ending of that Syracuse-Wake Forest game? #ACCTournament

No @WesDurham let the crowd reaction handle what needed to be said.

Credit to the TV commentator (Wes Durham?). He let the sounds of the game tell you what happened. Can’t wait to hear Stan’s call and response.

There are times when a TV announcer goes over the top on a game winning shot and there are times it’s warranted. Today, @WesDurham kept it simple on Wake’s GW Shot…Well done !
