ESPN can end its media rights deal with the ACC after the 2027 season, a laywer representing Florida State said during an emergency Board of Trustees meeting at the university on Friday.

As The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach notes, after 2027, ACC members have “no guaranteed media rights revenue” under the original Grant of Rights, which was signed in 2013. ESPN has until February of 2025 to make their decision on the option, according to the lawyer.

This news was shared on Friday as Florida State called a meeting to challenge the conference’s Grant of Rights as it explores the possibility of exiting the ACC. The university officially filed a lawsuit against the ACC on Friday, challenging the agreement and the hefty exit fee: $130 million, 3 times the operating budget of the league.

Florida State’s desire to leave the conference comes, of course, in the wake of the Seminoles being left out of the College Football Playoff’s Top 4. The Noles played to a 13-0 record which included an ACC championship, their first since 2014.

That was despite star quarterback Jordan Travis missing the ACC title game due to injury, which FSU fans citing that as the reason behind their team’s snub. FSU became the first team ever to be excluded from the College Football Playoff with a 13-0 record.
