Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is choosing to embrace the new 12-team College Football Playoff format.

The Tigers have thrived under the 4-team model, but they did miss the Playoff last season after suffering 3 early-season losses.

Swinney was excited about the prospect of CFP expansion.

“Hey, bring it on. Let’s go,” Swinney said after Clemson’s practice on Friday. “Just tell us what the rules are. I think we all knew this was coming. Tell us what the rules are, and let’s go play. We’ll be ready.”

As for the ACC as a whole, Swinney said he believes the playoff expanding could help the league.

“It helps everybody I would think,” Swinney added. “If we want playoff football in college football, then certainly going from four to 12 just mathematically gives everyone more opportunity. I don’t think there’s any question about that.

“We’ve been there with 4 (playoff teams) 6 times and I don’t think going to 12 hurts our chances or anybody else’s in the league.”

Clemson’s 6 College Football Playoff appearances trails only Alabama (7) for the most nationally in the playoff era. The Tigers have only missed the semifinals in 2014 and 2021.

Clemson will start its 2022 season on Monday night vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
