The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles used a 21-point 4th-quarter comeback to beat Duke and continue to make their push toward the College Football Playoff.

Saturday could be the last time the Seminoles face a Top 25 opponent in the regular season. Florida State extended their win streak to 13 games dating to last season, and the Seminoles have scored at least 30 points in each of those games.

It’s time to hand out some awards and predict how the rest of the season will unfold.

Player of the Week: Deuce Spann had 1 touch, but it was arguably the biggest play of the game. After Duke took a 17-7 lead on a pick-6 from Chandler Rivers, Spann took the ensuing kickoff and raced 99 yards down the sidelines into the end zone. At that point, the momentum was clearly favoring the Blue Devils, and Spann changed all of that. Spann has been a limited part of the Seminoles’ offense this season, but his play could be one that’s remembered if Florida State continues on its current undefeated path.

Freshman of the Week: Running back Rodney Hill rushed for a 9-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach and finished with 30 yards on 6 carries. The freshman from Statesboro, Georgia, also had a couple of kick returns for 42 yards.

Biggest surprise: Quarterback Jordan Travis had a decent night, going 27-for-36 for 2 touchdowns and the aforementioned interception. Eleven of his completions with to the tight ends with Jaheim Bell getting 8 catches for 53 yards to lead the group. At times Travis has seemed to have tunnel vision for wide receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson, but Saturday he spread the ball around to the tight ends and running backs much more. Both touchdown passes went to running backs — Caz Holmes and Lawrance Toafili.

Biggest concern: Duke was one-dimensional on offense because of QB Riley Leonard’s injury, but the Blue Devils still managed to rush for 197 yards and take a 20-17 lead going into the 4th quarter. For 3 quarters, it felt like Duke worked harder and wanted this more despite an injury to its best player.

Key stat: Duke quarterbacks Leonard and Henry Bellin IV combined to go 8-for-22 for 76 yards and an interception. One can smartly assume that Leonard’s inability to move or put much weight on his leg affected his ability to set and throw with any level of accuracy … and they would be correct. But still there are no asterisks on the stat sheet and the FSU secondary can take credit for a shut down performance.

Final thoughts on Week 8 vs. Duke: Good, not great performance from the Seminoles and they closed the show well. If Duke wins out, this will be a rematch in the ACC Championship Game with a much healthier Leonard. These might be the 2 best teams in the conference.

Predicting the rest of the season

After a 7-0 start, here’s where I predict Florida State will finish the 2023 season.

Week 9: at Wake Forest (4-3, 1-3)

Skinny: Mike Norvell is looking for his first win vs. Wake Forest. The tables have turned a bit with Florida State having the older, more experienced team on the field. And Wake Forest without quarterback Sam Hartman is much less scary. The Seminoles need a good road performance, but they’ll end their current 3-game losing streak to the Deacs.

Prediction: Florida State 35-17

Week 10: at Pittsburgh (2-5, 1-3)

Skinny: This was a game that I pointed to when the schedule was released as a potential pitfall. In the past, Pittsburgh has been a tough, physical team and it’s almost a guarantee that the weather will be bad in November. But these Panthers aren’t a good team and already had their big emotional win against Louisville a couple of weeks ago. Travis and the offense get rolling in a solid road performance.

Prediction: Florida State 38-13

Week 11: vs. Miami (5-2, 1-2)

Skinny: If Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke is healthy, this could be quite the matchup. Miami is big up front and if the Canes can run the ball and sustain long drives; there is a lot of upset potential here. Florida State will be a home and obviously highly motivated to beat a rival and continue its Playoff march. I think they will win, but their streak of scoring 30 points comes to an end.

Prediction: Florida State 28-21

Week 12: vs. North Alabama (3-5)

Skinny: A soft touch before the Gators and a chance for a lot of players to see the field on Senior Day.

Prediction: Florida State 55-6

Week 13: vs. Florida (5-2)

Skinny: Did I mention that Florida State hasn’t had a good road performance yet? The Seminoles will have a few opportunities to correct that before walking into The Swamp — a place they haven’t won at since 2017. What kind of Gators team will Florida State see? They have a tough schedule remaining and will walk into this game after road trips against Top 25 teams LSU and Missouri. If Florida can make this an ugly gritty game, will the Seminoles be up for the challenge of winning ugly? Florida State is the better team, but the Seminoles have had the better team before and left The Swamp disappointed. I think they will hold on this time — scoring under 30 points again, but completing the regular season 12-0.

Prediction: Florida State 27-23
