Former Florida State defender Malcolm Ray is heading to the Big Ten.

The fifth-year defensive lineman announced his commitment to Rutgers on social media Saturday. He’ll join the Scarlet Knights with one season of eligibility remaining after appearing in 42 games for the Seminoles.

Ray served in more of a reserve role this season for the Seminoles and chose to enter the transfer portal in December. He posted 19 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two pass breakups.

Following a redshirt year in 2019, Ray has posted 57 career tackles, 8.5 TFLs, three sacks, and two pass breakups.

It’s likely Ray would have had a larger role on the defensive line in 2024.

Florida State will see a pretty significant amount of turnover from the roster that went 13-1 and won the ACC this season. On the defensive side of the football, linemen Braden Fiske and Jared Verse led the group in 2023, and they’re both off to the NFL. In total, the Seminoles will need to replace seven of their top nine tacklers from the 2023 season.

The 2024 signing class is bringing three freshmen defensive linemen and a transfer edge rusher to Tallahassee.
