Louisville opened the second half of Wednesday’s Holiday Bowl trailing USC 28-14. The Cardinals gave up four first-half touchdown passes and 21 unanswered points after taking an early lead.

They needed a strong start to the third quarter, but came out with a three-and-out.

USC looked like it was going in for another score — it gained 32 yards on the second play of the possession to push inside the Louisville 10 — but then Quincy Riley jumped an out route at the goal line and returned it 61 yards, setting up an eventual touchdown from the Cards to draw within one possession.

Isaac Guerendo opened the ensuing possession with a 19-yard gain. He also had a 20-yard run on second down to move the ball down inside the USC 2. Two plays later, he plowed into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night.

It’s probably fair to think of the Riley interception as a 14-point swing. Or, at the very least, a 10-point swing. USC was in scoring position and had produced touchdowns on each of its previous four possessions.

Louisville was teetering.

And then Riley made a game-changing play.
