Since 2017, Miami defenders have proudly worn the turnover chain on the sidelines after every takeaway.

The tradition famously helped power the Canes to 31 takeaways and 10 wins in 2017. Numerous programs have since copied — or slightly modified — the concept since it first debuted.

But Miami is distancing itself from the tradition under new head coach Mario Cristobal. He made that decision public on Wednesday night, citing a culture shift.

While at the podium at ACC Kickoff on Thursday morning, Cristobal explained more of his reasoning.

“It is not a shot or form of disrespect to anybody or anyone,” Cristobal told reporters in Charlotte. “Certainly history is history, and whether it’s positive, whether it’s inconsequential, whatever it may be, it’s still history and part of your program. We’re just moving in a direction that right now doesn’t involve it. That’s really the best way to address it.

“Let’s put it this way. We’ve been working so hard and paying attention to so many other things that, in my opinion, are much more critical to winning football games and having success that it really hasn’t been a subject or a topic. We won’t be using it.”

The tradition first started under former Miami coach Mark Richt and carried through the end of the Manny Diaz era. Over the last 4 seasons, Miami went just 28-21.

Miami opens the 2022 campaign with Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 3.
