Drake Maye and the North Carolina Tar Heels fell victim to a classic trap game on Saturday night.

Hosting a hapless Virginia team with 1 win on the year (against an FCS foe, no less), the Tar Heels stumbled and sputtered all night long, eventually falling to the Cavaliers 31-27.

It’s not crazy to think that might be the most embarrassing loss that Mack Brown has ever suffered as a head coach. It also is certainly a death blow to the Tar Heels College Football Playoff hopes and Drake Maye’s Heisman hopes.

Fans and media members on social media were quick to react to Maye’s performance. Yes, he ran for a touchdown, threw for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he also had a costly interception late. And, well, Heisman winners don’t usually lose to teams like Virginia.

Here’s some of the reaction to Maye and the Tar Heels after the loss:

It’ll likely take a monumental effort down the stretch for Maye to earn an invite to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony at this point. Even then, it would likely be as a third- or fourth-place finisher.

What an awful loss for the Mack Brown, Drake Maye and the North Carolina Tar Heels program.
