North Carolina earned 4 spots on ESPN’s list of the top-100 college football players for the 2023 season, which they released on Wednesday morning.

Quarterback Drake Maye was the first Tar Heel to be named at No. 34 overall. Running back Omarion Hampton, linebacker Cedric Gray and linebacker Kaimon Rucker also made the list.

Maye entered the season as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but the Tar Heels did not have a great season in 2023. They finished the year with an 8-5 record despite starting 6-0 this season. Here’s some analysis from ESPN on Maye:

Despite a new offensive coordinator and playbook, plus a more balanced split with his ground game, Maye remained exceptional in 2023, accounting for 33 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards of total offense. Maye wrapped his UNC career with an 81.0 Total QBR, 79 touchdowns and more than 9,500 yards — enough to be in the conversation for the top spot in the 2024 NFL draft.

Hampton had a breakout season in the Tar Heels’ backfield and comes in at No. 64 on ESPN’s list. He rushed for 1,504 yards this season, putting him 5th amongst all FBS running backs.

Gray is UNC’s top-ranked defender on this list at No. 67. While Carolina’s defense struggled again this year, linebacker was still a strength for the Tar Heels. Gray finished the 2023 season with 11 tackles for loss.

Rucker also had a strong season for the Tar Heels on defense and cracked ESPN’s list at No. 81. He recorded 8.5 sacks this season.
