As Notre Dame attempts to sort out its quarterback issues for the 2022 season, the Fighting Irish could be looking for a quarterback of the future, too.

Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class is one of the best in the nation with just a couple months to go before the Early Signing Period. But the class lacks a quarter after Notre Dame missed out on a few of its top targets earlier in the cycle.

However, Notre Dame does have a commitment from one of the top passers in the country in the class of 2024 — 5-star quarterback CJ Carr.

The potential for Carr to re-classify into 2023 has been floated in the past. 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong brought it up again this week as he analyzed Notre Dame’s quarterback situation moving forward.

“I think the Irish are stacked with talent in every position room on campus, but quarterback is one of the biggest needs in this program,” Wiltfong said. “I think they know that and I think that they’ll attack it in 2023, whether that’s trying to get CJ Carr to reclassify, or finding another arm or perhaps looking into the portal at season’s end.”

Back in August, Notre Dame’s coaching staff sent a not-so-subtle message to Carr with this photo:

Carr is the No. 13 overall player and the No. 3 quarterback in the class of 2024, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s also the No. 1 player from the state of Michigan.

Carr has been committed to Notre Dame since June 9.

Notre Dame will be looking for its first win of the season on Saturday as it hosts Cal at 2:30 p.m. ET.
