Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer is rocketing up draft boards.

In his latest projections, Todd McShay of ESPN has Mayer at number 10 in his draft rankings. Mayer leads the Irish in receiving yards, with 233 through Week 5. Mayer has also contributed 3 TDs, while no other player on the Irish has more than 1.

Speaking on Mayer, McShay had the following to say:

Mayer’s best traits are his toughness and strength after the catch. He’s a bulldozer with the ball in his hands, and he generates yards by breaking tackles and carrying defenders. Of his 233 receiving yards, 100 have come after the catch. He is not a speedster but shows a lot of savvy setting up defenders at the top of stem and locating soft spots in zone. Mayer also has a big catch radius and reliable hands, and he does a very good job adjusting to the ball outside his frame. He has an edge as a blocker, too, though his technique is still a work in progress.

Mayer is widely thought to be the best TE available in the 2023 NFL Draft if he declares. If the Irish can turn their season around, Mayer will be a big reason why.

Mayer will be in action again on Saturday as Notre Dame faces BYU in Las Vegas.
