Notre Dame is headed to the Gator Bowl.

The Fighting Irish will be playing South Carolina in their bowl game this year. The Gator Bowl is played annually in Jacksonville, Fla.

Here’s the announcement:

There was reportedly a brief delay in setting Notre Dame’s bowl game as the Holiday Bowl was also in the running to land the Fighting Irish. Instead, UNC and Oregon will play in that bowl.

This is Notre Dame’s fourth-ever trip to the Gator Bowl, but its first since 2002. The Fighting Irish are 1-2 all-time in the Gator Bowl, with their lone win coming back in 1976.

Notre Dame and South Carolina also have a long history that dates back decades. The Irish are 3-1 all-time against the Gamecocks, with their first meeting also coming back in 1976. This will be the first-ever matchup between these two programs in a bowl game. South Carolina won the most-recent battle in 1984.

Notre Dame’s starting quarterback for this game is unknown. With Drew Pyne entering the transfer portal, true freshman Steve Angeli could be in line for his first career start. It’s also possible, although unlikely, that Tyler Buchner could be healthy enough to play.

The Gator Bowl will be played on Friday, Dec. 30.
