Former Miami defensive back Al Blades Jr. is staying in the ACC.

Blades announced on Monday evening that he has committed to Duke. He’ll play for coach Mike Elko and the Blue Devils in 2023.

Here’s his announcement:

Blades is a Miami legacy and has spent the last five years with the Canes. He will have one year of eligibility remaining at Duke. He is the son of former Miami defensive back Al Blades Sr.

Blades heads to Durham after an up-and-down career with Miami. He saw early playing time with the Hurricanes, collecting 77 tackles and 4 interceptions over his first 3 years with the program. But over the past 2 seasons, Blades mostly fell off Miami’s depth chart. He made 11 tackles and 1 pass deflection for Miami in 2022.

While Miami and Duke have long been annual opponents in the Coastal division, that changes in 2023. With the ACC getting rid of divisions next season, the Hurricanes and Blue Devils will not face off next season. Next season will be the first time since 2004 that Miami and Duke will not play each other.
