Mario Cristobal and Miami took care of business in Week 1 with a 38-3 win over Miami (Ohio) on Friday night.

The outcome of the game was decided long before the final whistle, giving the Hurricanes an opportunity to put younger players into the game. When Miami’s 2nd-string offense took the field late in the 2nd half, it was true freshman Emory Williams who got the nod under center.

Williams ran the 2nd team offense instead of returning backup quarterback Jacurri Brown. After the game, Cristobal seemed to imply that the No. 2 QB job has not completely been settled.

Cristobal said Williams was the backup quarterback “for today.’ When asked why Williams got the nod over Brown, Cristobal kept it brief.

“He deserved it,” Cristobal said.

Williams was a 3-star prospect in the class of 2023. For much of the last recruiting cycle, Williams wasn’t even the top-ranked quarterback in Miami’s class. But he ended up being the only signal-caller to sign with the Canes and appears to be ready to make an impact if needed.

Williams played very well in his limited snaps on Friday night. He completed all 3 of his pass attempts for 42 yards.

Last season, Brown played in 8 games as he stepped in for an injured Tyler Van Dyke and an often-ineffective Jake Garcia. He completed 60% of his passes for 230 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Miami will be in action again on Saturday against Texas A&M.
