Al Golden was effusive in his praise for quarterback Sam Hartman after Notre Dame edged host Duke 21-14 in Week 5.

The defensive coordinator made his glowing comments after being asked about Hartman saying he wanted to buy him a Ferrari after the victory.

Hartman guided Notre Dame to a game-winning drive capped off with a 30-yard rushing score from Audric Estime and the ensuing 2-point conversion pass to Rico Flores Jr. with 31 seconds to go.

“That speaks volumes. He just had arguably the biggest play of the year and he’s talking about someone else and some other component of the team,” Golden said. “I did not know that. My wife told me that.”

Golden raves about the character of the the senior from Charlotte, NC and how he’s the perfect leader for the Fighting Irish.

“But what’s more remarkable is I came in early Sunday and Sam came in and told me personally. Number 1, what are you doing up son? We just landed at 4 a.m,” Golden said. “The type of young man that he is. You can tell why everybody wants to lay it on the line for Sam Hartman.”

Next up for No. 10 Notre Dame is a road contest at No. 25 Louisville on Saturday (7:30 p.m. EST/ABC).
