CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has updated his bowl projections for Notre Dame following the Irish’s loss to USC this weekend.

Notre Dame had a chance of reaching a New Year’s Six Bowl if it had upset USC. Instead, Palm is projecting Notre Dame will face Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl.

This would be Notre Dame’s fourth appearance in the Gator Bowl, but first since 2002. Notre Dame lost on that stage in 2002 and 1998 but won in 1976.

This projection would mean the first-ever meeting between Notre Dame and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a dramatic win over rival Ole Miss on Thanksgiving. They went 8-4 overall this season and 4-4 in SEC play.

Notre Dame finished the year with an 8-4 record. The Irish won eight of their final 10 games after starting the year with losses to Ohio State and Marshall.

Notre Dame will learn its official bowl destination next week.
