Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is being heavily pursued by LSU for its head coaching vacancy, per a report.

That’s per The Athletic’s college football staff. Kelly arrived at Notre Dame in 2010 is the winningest coach in program history.

LSU’s coaching search was previously focused on Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher and Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley. With Fisher announcing his intentions to move on and Riley taking the USC job, it appears LSU athletic director Scott Woodward is now focused on Kelly.

Notre Dame is in the midst of one of its most successful runs in program history right now. The Fighting Irish have won 10+ in five consecutive seasons, which had never before been accomplished in South Bend.

Notre Dame is also still in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth depending on what happens this week. If the Fighting Irish make the CFP, Kelly presumably would remain with the program through at least their semifinal matchup.

If Kelly does leave, defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman and Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell would be logical candidates to replace him.
