Pitt was one of the last teams to crack the field and as a result the Panthers had to travel to Dayton, Ohio to play Mississippi State in the First Four Tuesday night. They decided they did not want to go home any time soon either, downing the Bulldogs 60-59.

It’s Pitt’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2014.

And it was a tough win for Jeff Capel’s squad. The Panthers trailed for much of the game, but found a surge of offense late to take a 58-52 lead. The Bulldogs fought all the way back and retook the lead, but Jamarius Burton put Pitt ahead once again with 9 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs had a wide open look from 3 for the win on the following possession, but couldn’t hit the shot.

Nelly Cummings led the way for the Panthers, scoring 15 points with 4 assists. Greg Elliott played well too, contributing 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

With the win, the Panthers will travel to Greensboro to face off against Iowa State in the Round of 64. The game is set to tip Friday, March 17 at 3:10 p.m. EST
