Injuries happen in sports, but it’s especially rough when a player hurts himself celebrating a big play. That was the unfortunate case for Virginia DT Olasunkonmi Agunloye on Saturday against Tennessee.

Agunloye recovered a punt return fumbled by UT’s Dee Williams. While celebrating the play on the sideline, he injured his leg and could not walk under his own power. Agunloye was carted off the field to be checked out.

Agunloye is in his fourth season at UVA. He has played in 21 games over 3 seasons, making the only start of his career in the 2021 season.

Last season, Agunloye appeared in all 10 games for the Cavaliers. He posted a career-high 20 tackles, including 10 solo stops, 2 TFLs and 1 sack.

If Agunloye’s injury is as serious as it looks, he has multiple seasons of eligibility remaining. The NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver can be applied to the 2020 season, and he can use a redshirt to any season in which he participates in 4 games or fewer.

No. 12 Tennessee leads Virginia 21-3 at the half in Nashville. The game is airing on ABC. The Vols entered the game as 27.5-point favorites.
