Virginia Tech’s quarterback room has taken a hit.

Hokies coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday that Pop Watson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Watson (full name William Waverly Watson III), is in his freshman season with the Hokies. He has not recorded any stats this season.

Out of Springfield (Massachusetts) Central, Watson picked up scholarship offers from 12 schools during his recruitment. He committed to the previous Nebraska coaching staff in early 2022.

Virginia Tech formally extended a scholarship offer to Watson when he visited in December. Watson backed off his pledge to the Huskers and flipped to the Hokies, joining Pry’s program as an early signee later that month.

Grant Wells is Virginia Tech’s leading passer so far this season. In 2 games, Wells is 33-of-62 for 494 yards, 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Kyron Drones has played in all 3 games, going 22-of-40 for 230 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

At Wednesday’s practice, Drones was taking first-team reps. Watson did not practice.

Virginia Tech is 1-2 amid a 2-game losing skid to Big Ten opponents Purdue and Rutgers. The Hokies host Marshall on Saturday, a game set for noon ET on ESPN2.
